This is our home. It is humanity’s only home. Our blue boat home in the mostly empty sea of the universe. How did this come to be? How is it that the ocean and land are in separate places; that trees all grow in the same manner; that flocks of birds, schools of fishes and human cities all exist for the same reason? How is it that the sky is blue, that life and death occur for all living things, or that the emotions of love and joy and sorrow and fear are all imprinted on every human being? What is it that makes life possible and keeps the process of evolution inextricably moving forward? Why does the sun burn giving us light and heat, and how is it that our planet—our home—is kept at just the right distance from our star? We exist in a system that has power vastly superior to ours, and our only hope for survival is to learn more about how this system works so that we can work together more effectively.
Can we find the common thread that unites all of humanity? One that will grant us the understanding to break down the walls of prejudice and bigotry which keep us separated, warring with each other and disregarding the truly life affirming work of compassion and justice?
Is there one supremely powerful, everlasting, and universal force that we can quantify and accurately predict its effect? A force that is blind to race, gender, language, politics, religion, ethnicity? A force that shapes every aspect of our existence without a single bit of purpose or intention? A force that, simply by knowing it better, will grant us the power to better understand how truly common to each of us the experience of life is?
